By now most of you will know this but, for those who don't, I started a studio with my friend TODD HARRIS, called GENRE 19. The purpose of the pairing is for the two of us to tell certain sorts of stories together that we might not otherwise attempt. Our first project is PRODIGAL: EGG OF FIRST LIGHT a two-issue mini series being published by APE ENTERTAINMENT in February 2010.

It is what we like to call chock full of fun and ass-kickery.

There is no spandex. There are no super heroes. There are no secret identities. And yet we think this book will appeal not only to mainstream comic book fans but also anyone who just loves a good old action-adventure.

I thought at first that it was just a collection of superhero short stories, but it is actually a shared world anthology with a progression to the stories that makes sense by the time you've read it all. These are authors with much less fear in them than I have. When asked to do a superhero story, I turned in a modest tale about a relatively low powered teenage girl with a few personal problems. These authors tackle the big issues--right and wrong, power vs. responsibility, and the fate of the planet. I am humbled and amazed by their efforts.

The Big Announcement (part one)

It was a long time coming and fraught with perils I will never describe in mixed company but we made it to the beach.

It's called PRODIGAL and it kicks ass.

Well.

It's winding down again and there is some news. It's not good.

My friend and sometime mentor, MARCO PALMIERI, was let go from his job at SIMON & SCHUSTER along with 34 others in what was, I'm sure, the aftermath of some furious salary crunching. I know nothing of these matters and won't opine but I do know what Marco has meant to my professional life (and therefore my non-pro life).

I had just come in second in the now sadly defunct STRANGE NEW WORLDS contest and had pounded Marco's e-mailbox with pitch after pitch which were each quickly (though not cruelly) rejected. After what I had thought was a pretty auspicious beginning, I had sunk to the depths that only a person who's had their nose to the dining hall glass and been allowed to watch the feast but not participate can really ever know. That's a sucky place to be, man. Believe you me.

Then, out of nowhere, he offered me a slot in an upcoming anthology that another writer had vacated for some reason (still unknown to me). I jumped on it and, without going into too much detail, that began what was, to date, the most exciting and mind-wrenching period of my creative life. I got to write that story and one more for Marco and, eventually, my first published novel.

If you're not a writer you'll not have a real idea of what any of this means emotionally. The word milestone is a microscopic description. Inadequate to the thing it attempts to encapsulate as E=MC2 is inadequate to describe the Theory it's come to represent.

We like to claim, some of us, that everything we write is the sole property of our private creative muse, that no hand or eye was instrumental in the carving of the final distributed product that delights (or disgusts, I suppose) our fans. Not so. At least, not so in my case.

Marco is that best kind of editor, in my opinion, he functions like a sort of literary ninja or, maybe, surgeon, using tiny cuts and incisions to the various drafts that shape the whole into things unplanned by the author. Things unplanned and, again, in m case, often superior. At least that's how he was with me.

The 3ish years (aggregate) I worked with Marco taught me more about writing than the previous two decades combined.

And that's the crux. I'm a better writer now, by far, than I was when I met him. Yeah, he did a lot to expand the STAR TREK line both in breadth and depth. Yeah, his tenure will be looked on the way we look on eras of the filmed versions of the property and that with appropriate admiration. But he made ME a better writer and that's what counts to me. He kicked ass, as they say in my neighborhood. Kicked and took names. I'm happy mine was one of them. Lucky, in fact.

It's sort of selfish to say it this way, I suppose, making this thing about him about his impact on me. He's the one with the heavy load right now, after all. But the thing is, you don't really do anything that matters in life beyond leaving your mark on other people. Nothing else matters as far as I'm concerned and Marco certainly made his mark on me.

There's no higher praise I think a writer can give to an editor than "You made me better." More than that, he made it look easy.

I know things will work out fine in his end of the world. The wheel always turns and to be pessimistic about the turning is to waste one's intellect. An editor I know told me that once, or words to that effect. And they are true.

But this is a closed chapter and I'd like to mark it.

That's the most important news this week. Something else soon, I think.

#1 Just got the proofs for BARREN WORLDS, the new antho from Hadley Rille that I was lucky enough to get into. Let me just tell you, this book will be AWESOME. You don't even have to read my particular story.

It is just chock full of scifi goodness. My story is called ANTIOPE IN BLACK.

#2 Just handed off the script for the new, super secret, comic book project and, OMG! This thing could turn out to be the most fun I've ever had writing. I can't say a word about the plot or the characters yet but we will be making a few choice announcements as we get closer to San Diego Comic Con time.

Well. I'm officially insane. Among all my other projects I've decided to run a web-only novel, BETTER ANGELS, for fun and, just possibly, profit.

It's not scifi and it's ABSOLUTELY not for kids. There's violence, drug use, sex and more violence. And a lot of so-called strong language. This isn't a selling point. It's an actual warning to people who like my STAR TREK work and would come here expecting something similar.

DON'T. This is almost the precise opposite of STAR TREK. I think it's fun but it's not for kids.

NEW STUFF

HEY! After the big fun I had last year with TRIANGULATION and my first sale to a magazine, I figured it would be fun to do more wacky antho stuff. But first, LL Cool J.

So, as of yesterday, three short stories of mine are officially included in three separate venues with availability beginning over the next few weeks.

THE DAME WORE A TESSERACT, from my ALT.WORLD universe, will appear in the next issue of ASTONISHING ADVENTURES MAGAZINE (neo Pulp fiction RULES, baby!) and another ALT.WORLD story, ANTIOPE IN BLACK, will appear in the upcoming BARREN WORLDS antho from HADLEY RILLE books.

The third story, THE COST OF OPENING, is from another of my made-up universes: the fictional city of ARCANA. It will appear in the upcoming HARDBOILED HORROR antho from NOTORIOUS PRESS.

There's more antho news coming but I can't say until contracts are signed.

OH. For those of you who don't like to spend money, I'm going to debut a web novel, BETTER ANGELS, in the next few days so keep a lookout.

STARTREK.COM is being revamped, probably in light of the upcoming film. As a result, the entire staff was let go =( and all articles and images that were in the pipeline will now never see the light of day.

I've been talking about this in hushed tones since last year. Since the beginning of last year. Now that the artist has been finalized (and the publisher has given an interview outing us) I can finally say that THE RED LINE, a superhero story by yours truly, is on its way to a comic shop near you.

So there's still some slow movement and I thought I'd bring you up to speed.

Comic book thing #1: is moving ahead. There should be an official announcement around May 1st but I can say right now that it involves superheroes and violence. SHOCKING, I know, but there it is. More details once I'm allowed to spill them.

Comic book thing #2: Contracts have arrived and are being gone over. No SPBs, no spandex. Just straight-out scifi in the Michael Crichton vein.

The Set: Still on hold for reasons unknown

The Novel thing: Still in process. Should have freedom to give specifics soon.

New thing: A web comic venture, free to all, done by me and another guy I know who's wicked talented. More on that as the launch gets closer. This thing is going to KILL and, best of all, you won't have to pay for it (unless one of the bigs picks us up and then, cha-CHING!).

Anyway.

STAR TREK: VOYAGER: DISTANT SHORES, containing my story OR THE TIGER (and stacks of others by the other fine contributors), is out in many retail stores and buyable from AMAZON right now. Go buy it. It makes my publisher and my editor like me better when you do.

November 20th of this year. That's a little more than a month from now so set some fins aside.

I just got an email from the publisher saying the book is held up at the distributor level for reasons that are arcane and incomprehensible to my twisty writer brain.

Suffice it to say that the book is done and set to go. Just waiting for DIAMOND to add water and stir.

Black !nk, an imprint of Hometown Productions, is releasing a graphic anthology called THE SET this year to coincide with the world famous SAN DIEGO COMIC CONVENTION.

My story, ironically featuring a character called REDJACK, will be one of those presented in this first volume of short tales.

It should also be buyable at a comic shop or book store near you around that time so this counts as early warning.

Oh, and I drew half the pictures in my story too.

The other half were done by a fantastic artist called TODD HARRIS whose name you will be hearing a lot of in the next few years.
